____________Character Sheet End__________________________________________________
Sinders’ cabin sits on the outskirts of Isa Verys, near a small waterway named Wolf Creek. One of the few sources that feed into Lake Meiron. Its water is cool and fresh, for being so close to the Demon Wastes. Sixgill and Pilcat can be caught here year round, as long as you can find holes in the ice during winter. The trees here have not been touched by the darkness and groves of birch and cedar are plentiful. Sinder was never truly accepted with in town, but he has made enough of name for himself as a respected explorer and ranger, that the town tolerates him. His close work with the foresters has earned their respect. His closest and only friend is Kodo, a young woman who has devoted herself to helping and healing.
Act 1:
Scene 1: Montage: Revelation / Aftermath , Distance, Anger, Machinery (Conflict consequences: Explore / Supplies ruined)
Sinder asleep in his cabin opens his eyes. On the periphery of his senses, something had woken him. Slowing his breathing he opens his mind to the world cataloging his senses, looking for the source of his wakefulness. (Intent: I don’t want to be surprised in the night. I don’t know exactly what I am facing yet (threat roll 3, stakes are minor). Explorer +1, Weird Senstive = rolled a 7, -1 for explorer = 6, success (wierd current number increased to 7). Using the keyword distance for the scene and the low threat I take this to mean that the threat is at a distance.) Lifting slowly from his bed Sinder tilts his head slightly as the sounds register to his ears. Screaming from far off, coming from the direction of Isa Verys. Quickly donning his pack, bow and blades he begins the ½ mile trek toward town.
Oracle: Is there any immediate threats near the cabin? (26) No, but...hazard flood or fire.
Cresting the small hill near his cabin, Sinder see’s the glow of fire emanating from the town. The flames causing a silhouette of orange and black. The buildings standing out in stark contrast to the hazy orange of the fire.
Oracle: Is the fire in the part of town near Kodo? (9) No, and...Using Machinery
Sinder breathes a sigh of relief that Kodo’s home is not in the area of the fire. He has no doubt that she will be in the streets helping where she can, applying her talents as a healer where needed. He would expect nothing else of her. The region of the fire seems to be in the NE corner of town near the area where the silver is processed.
Oracle: is the fire an accident? (6, I need new dice) No, and...Using Revelation
Sinder continues to run through the darkness of the forest toward town. The task made easier by the faint glow of the large fire. It isn’t until he clears the trees near the East Gate that realization sets in, the torn bodies laying about the ground proof of the raid. The wounds and the contorted faces of the dead frozen in fear leave no doubt. A raid from the demon wastes. Sinder can’t help but wonder, “why now?” Slipping the bow from his back, he slows and approaches more cautiously.
Oracle: Is there still the sound of fighting? (25) No, but….the fire continues to burn
Sinder passes through the gate, the sheer amount of devastation that was laid upon Isla Verys in such a small amount of time is hard to comprehend. “Why?” he mutters again to himself. He can see people milling about now, in shock. He spies the kneeling form of Kodo not far off. She appears to be rendering aid to someone laying in the street. He approaches slowly. She looks up at him tears welling in her eyes Sinder can now tell the boy is dead. His limp burned head is still resting in her lap. “It was a firesnake and a group of hobgoblins. The snake was bigger than anything I have ever heard of, they were following the commands of a Tempter. They took that silver shipment that came in two days ago I think. They also destroyed our grain silo’s and more if we don’t get that fire under control.” Sinder touches her shoulder reassuringly and nods. Looking around he moves toward the area in need of most assistance.
Oracle: Can the fire be put out before it destroys more food stores? (45) No.
Sinder and the people of Isla Verys fight the fire through the night. A guard is re-established to stand watch in hopes to give warning should the demon's return. Sinder is exhausted.both mentally and physically by the time the fire is finally under control. Thanks are offered by many, yet many standback and stare, saying with their eyes that they fear to say openly. Something that Sinder has become used to through his years. The fire struck Isla Verys hard and with only a few months until winter they will be hard pressed to find the provisions they need to make it through the cold months. Battered, exhausted and dirty Sinder says farewell to Kodo before making the trek back to his cabin to clean up and get some rest. As he drifts off to sleep he keeps toying with the same questions, “Why now?”
End Scene.
